Marissa: Hi guys, it’s Marissa with IE and I'm here with Conk Creet!
Name, age, occupation?
Gavin: Gavin, 22 and drummer
M: Name, age, occupation?
Jericho: Jericho, 23, accountant
M: Name, age, occupation?
Ethan: Ethan, 21, bio student
M: You guys have a song named Risk It All
G: Yes
M: Yes you do, I like that song
What has been the riskiest thing you’ve done in music so far?
G: Pursue it at all, over getting a degree and getting a real job because you gotta invest a lot of money and you don’t make a lot back
J: Trying to balance a real job and playing music at the same time
E: Probably the same as that but also joining Conk Creet about a few weeks ago and trying to get all the songs down and making sure I had that all set up
M: With that being said, Ethan, I know you just joined like you just said, what has been your favorite song to practice with the guys so far?
E: I mean I love playing risk it all, it’s a fun one. We are not playing it tonight, unfortunately, but I also like “Honey Baby” that’s a really fun one to play.
M: And what are you guys’ favorite songs to perform?
G: Our favorite?
J: Favorite? I think since… the old Ethan didn’t like to play “Free Fall” but we are playing “Free Fall” tonight, cuz he is not gonna object so I'm really looking forward to playing that one.
G: Probably “Better Late Than Never”.
E: I think “I’m Big Dumb”
G: That’s our favorite one
E: I’m excited to play “I’m Big Dumb”
M: Rother Bay, what does that name mean to you guys?
J: Rother Bay?!
G: That’s hilarious
J: Ask [Gavin]
G: Rother Bay is Brenton’s… shoutout Brenton, we love Brenton, he is the best. That’s our old frontman. Brenton was a very good friend to me. Rother bay is one of his old projects.
We actually had talked and still actually might do it about using those, Rother Bay getting taken down and those songs being absorbed into Conk Creet.
J: Oh! I would like that
G: “Something About You” I think that’s one of them is called, that song is so sick
M: You guys have any advice for those guys three years ago, who just started getting into music?
G: To chill out cuz when we did it, like, we just went off I guess and specially me and Brenton since it was just us at the start really just like pounded it and tried to like push it out as much as possible and it was fun but I think looking back I realized I went maybe too hard in some ways and burnt myself out.
But I don’t know, you can change it now its cool to look back on for sure
J: Um, I was twenty, three years ago, I’d probably say think about what you wanna do and why and then strive towards that. If you want to make a name for yourself realize that doesn’t mean anything cuz you’re only here for x amount of time and then even people forget you after you’re dead doesn’t mean anything so focus on the after life.
E: Yeah, I think… I mean im not like going for music as my full time thing, but at the same time like I think when I first started like I could have my own band as well I let that kinda consume my life I like spent nonstop time doing that.
And I didn’t get where I wanted to be and I was really upset with that and then it just kinda like instead of looking and seeing what you could’ve done looking over and like appreciating what you had done.
M: Alright if you guys could play any song that isn’t yours and own it, what would it be?
G: And own it?
J: Fred Hammond, It would have to be Fred Hammond. I been thinking of somehow making a gospel band just to play Fred Hammond songs.
G: We do love Gospel music. Me and Jericho when we are working on stuff it has turned into us just listening to old like, half preaching, half like singing, classic gospel music, like Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, some Maverick City. We like when people start preaching to us in the middle of a song. Feel it in your bones.
What would it be tho. “Rock of Ages” maybe. We used to sound check before. I don’t know. We are covering “Teenage Dirtbag” tonight and that would be pretty fun to have it be our song.
M: Ethan, do you think that “Teenage Dirtbag” should be you guys’ song.
E: Absolutely. I think that, also kinda of a different route but I love “Sinking Ship” by Backseat Lovers, I think that would be a great song to like have as ours. Its like one of my favorite songs.
G: Both Ethans love Backseat Lovers.
M: Shoutout Backseat Lovers, Im gonna get you guys one day.
Alright, you guys have a song called “Lorraine”. So… why are you looking like that?
G: I’m wondering how much you’ve figured out
M: You guys have a song called Lorraine, do you think in 1 minute you guys could make a song using the three of your names?
G: No
J: The three of our names?
G: We could try but it wouldn’t be any good
M: You could try. It doesn’t have to be good
G: Even when we got time to work on things you see how they turn out. It’s still kind of a mish mash, even when we put time into things.
J: But the thing is “Lorraine” the whole story behind that it’s really fascinating and Gavin you tell the story.
G: “Lorraine” is a about my ex-landlord. I was living with this like, 90 year old lady and, she was lovely at first.
It was my first time moving out and I was very excited to go to college and as time passed things, I don’t wanna like trash her too much for something that people are gonna see, but it went downhill very quickly towards the end.
And the song I started it when I was like “oh my word” thank you for giving me a place to live and the way it ended like there were words that we didn’t end up using that they were like “you’re killing me, you’re killing me, I can’t breathe”.
J: Like you’re physically killing me.
G: And the way that I ended up leaving was like deathly sick from essentially being, essentially being poisoned by my land lord inadvertently and this was when I lived with Sammy for a couple months, but that is Lorraine. She is awesome
J: To make a song about me its like Debits and credits, microbiology and then like…
E: Biology
J: Yeah so I don’t know how interesting that is
G: We are not, I don’t know we always say it, we are not that special we are kinda like just a few like random dudes that happen to bump into each other and make music and honestly, if we could making anything we would be like “Don’t let us make more music, let someone else make some music” and like see that you could go do it yourself. It’s not that hard, its not that like crazy, like we appreciate the people that support us and we love to support other people.
M: That’s so good.
Lastly, what's next for Conk Creet?
J: That’s a great question.
G: You guys can start that one
J: What’s next for Conk Creet? Well we need to write a lot more and I think we are gonna plan that out as a band and see what we wanna do. Umm we have a lot of energy, we have a lot of ambition but its just a matter of how do we direct that. We’ve had a lot of changes as a band, we’ve had a lot of risks I guess you could say. But that’s part of it and so what do we do with that I don’t have an answer but we’re looking to seeing what happens. We all love each other though so that’s a start.
G: *Looking at Ethan* What do you wanna do?
M: Yeah what do you wanna do Ethan?
E: Yeah, I don’t know.
G: What’s the project with Nate Called
E: E and N. Yeah actually, I’ve been putting a lot of more work into that. But for Conk Creet, I just want to keep playing with them. Keep jamming, help write some stuff too, so that’s what’s exciting for me but I think like for Conk Creet as a whole is up to them. It’s my first show with them.
M: Exciting, you’re gonna be great. Do you guys have any last words?
G: I guess my answer for that last question would be like for the future I think throwing that show we did for releasing “Lorraine” that was kinda like a charity show and it encompassed a lot of… we had food that we made for people, there was like a thrift sale.
M: There was a blog.
G: Did you see it?
M: Yeah I watched it.
G: It was super fun. And like we had friends that got to make a blog, and like we had friends that came and play and friends that that was their first show. And people from Colorado playing and like it was so cool to see the community come out and have it not just be just music but also like “oh we’re gonna go and do some thrift shopping” or “we are gonna go and just meet up with some people” and hang out and look at art.
So I think the future its maybe throwing more events compared to shows because our goal in the end its to like… we just wanna like kinda unite people around Conk Creet like we don’t really care about the band per say or the music its more like “hey who can we like reach and impact through this” and we’ve been so blessed and so lucky to like to have any sort of small audience via spotify and Instagram and its been insane to hear from people in other countries or other states and then like meet this people or hear from people, we’ve had really close friends that like came to us after times of knowing them and would say “hey this meant something to me throughout this time when I was struggling with X, Y or Z” and this are huge problems and we didn’t even know.
Like when we did it I was about to go to college and Growing Pains was a throwaway album that me and Brenton thought… you know it’s, we don’t know what will come of it but we love to keep reaching people.
J: I think what you are trying to say its make sure its not just about music
G: It’s never been about just music
J: Cuz that’s just… cuz why would… if its just for sound if its just to like dance a lil bit that’s just like…who cares
G: We are wasting everyone’s time. We are wasting our time. We are wasting your time. Like if there is no actual human connection and like we are just like “oh yeah we are a cool band” then there is nothing there for us, you know? I don’t know
M:Alright, well thank you guys. We’ll see you guys next episode. Goodbye
